What prevents me from following God's call more deeply?

Answer

Several factors might prevent one from following God's call more deeply:

  1. Fear of Change: Embracing a deeper spiritual path often requires significant life changes, which can be daunting. The fear of the unknown or of disrupting one's current life can be a strong deterrent.

  2. Doubt and Skepticism: Doubts about one's faith, the existence of God, or the interpretation of divine will can create barriers. This might stem from personal experiences, intellectual challenges, or cultural influences.

  3. Distractions of Modern Life: The busyness of everyday life, with its responsibilities, entertainments, and commitments, can distract from spiritual pursuits. It's easy for priorities to shift towards the immediate and tangible.

  4. Comfort and Complacency: Sometimes, people might feel they are "good enough" in their current level of faith or practice, leading to a lack of motivation to delve deeper. Comfort can breed complacency where one is satisfied with the status quo rather than seeking more.

  5. Lack of Community Support: Without a community or group to share the journey, the path can feel lonely or less urgent. Encouragement, shared experiences, and accountability from others can be vital for deepening one's faith.

  6. Personal Sin or Guilt: Feelings of unworthiness due to personal failings or sins can make one hesitant to pursue a closer relationship with God, feeling they are not "worthy" of such a call.

  7. Misunderstanding or Misinterpretation: Sometimes, individuals might not recognize God's call because it doesn't match their expectations or because they misinterpret what they are feeling or experiencing.

  8. Physical or Mental Health: Challenges in health can limit one's capacity to engage in spiritual practices or to hear and respond to spiritual calls.

To overcome these barriers, it might be helpful to engage in prayer, seek guidance from spiritual leaders or mentors, join a faith community, or even explore retreats or spiritual exercises that facilitate a deeper connection with your faith. Remember, the journey towards a deeper call is often personal and unique, involving steps of faith, patience, and self-reflection.
