How do I experience the glory of heaven in the Eucharistic celebration?

Gloria

The Gloria begins by echoing the proclamation of the angels at the birth of Christ:  “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.“

-- New American Bible, Revised Edition (Luke  2:14)

I can hardly imagine the joy of that moment. I give glory and praise to God for the precious gift of His Son as our savior. My mind and heart are lifted up to heaven to join in the celebration as the angels continuously praise God. I imagine all the angels and saints gathered around the throne. My heart is filled with joy as I think about the angels and saints that are gathered around the altar as we begin Mass.

Most Rev. Mitchell T. Rozanski Archbishop of St. Louis

  1. Understanding the Eucharist as a Heavenly Banquet:
    • The Eucharist is often understood as a foretaste or participation in the heavenly banquet. When you receive the Eucharist, you are participating in the mystery of Christ's presence, which is believed to unite you with God and the communion of saints. This act is seen as a moment where heaven and earth converge.
  2. Liturgical Participation:
    • Prayer and Worship: Engaging fully in the prayers, hymns, and responses during Mass can help you feel connected to the divine. The liturgical texts are designed to elevate the mind and heart towards God, reflecting the worship that occurs in heaven.
    • Sacred Music: Music in the liturgy, especially during moments like the Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy), can evoke a sense of transcendence, mirroring the praises sung by angels in heaven as described in biblical texts.
  3. Mystical Presence:
    • The doctrine of the Real Presence in the Catholic Church teaches that Christ is truly present in the Eucharist. This belief can make the Mass feel like an encounter with the divine, bringing a sense of awe and wonder akin to what one might imagine in heaven.
  4. Communal Aspect:
    • Being part of the Church, the Body of Christ, during Mass, gives a glimpse of the unity and love that characterize heaven. Each member of the congregation, from the clergy to the laity, is part of this communal celebration, embodying the communal aspect of heavenly life.
  5. Sacramental Grace:
    • The sacraments, particularly the Eucharist, are channels of grace. Experiencing this grace can feel like a foretaste of the beatific vision, where one sees God "face to face" as described in theological terms.
  6. Meditation and Reflection:
    • Before, during, or after Mass, spending time in silent prayer or meditation on the mysteries of faith can deepen your experience. Reflecting on the scripture readings, the homily, or personal intentions can be a way to connect with the divine in a personal and profound manner.
  7. Visual and Sensory Elements:
    • The use of incense, candles, icons, or stained glass in the church can create an atmosphere that feels otherworldly, helping to transport one's senses beyond the mundane to a more spiritual plane.

To fully experience this, one might:
  • Prepare spiritually before Mass through prayer or confession.
  • Listen attentively to the liturgy, especially the Eucharistic Prayer where the transformation of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ is proclaimed.
  • Offer your whole self in worship, not just being physically present but also mentally and spiritually engaged.

Remember, the depth of this experience can vary greatly from one person to another, shaped by personal faith, understanding, and openness to the mystery of the Eucharist. Each celebration might offer new insights or feelings of connection to the divine, contributing to one's spiritual journey towards experiencing the "glory of heaven."
