The offering I place on the altar at Mass is the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. What does God want to give me in return?

In the context of Christian theology, particularly within the Catholic tradition, the Mass is seen as both a sacrifice and a sacred meal. Here's what is traditionally understood about what God offers in return for the offering:

  1. Eucharistic Grace: Through the Eucharist, which is believed to be the Body and Blood of Christ, God offers:
    • Spiritual Nourishment: The Eucharist is seen as food for the soul, strengthening the believer's spiritual life.
    • Forgiveness of Sins: Participation in the Eucharist is believed to bring about the forgiveness of venial sins and an increase in sanctifying grace.
    • Union with Christ: It fosters a deeper communion with Christ, which is both a present reality and a promise of eternal life.
  2. Grace for Transformation:
    • Sanctification: The grace received helps in the process of becoming more like Christ, aiding in personal holiness.
    • Strength and Peace: It offers spiritual strength to face daily challenges and peace amidst life's turmoil.
  3. Communion with the Church:
    • Unity with the Body of Christ: The Eucharist unites the individual with the whole Church, both on earth and in heaven, fostering a sense of community and mutual support.
  4. A Pledge of Future Glory:
    • Hope of Eternal Life: By participating in the Eucharist, believers are reminded and assured of the promise of resurrection and eternal life with God.
  5. Divine Love and Mercy:
    • God's Love: It's an experience of God's love, a direct encounter with divine mercy and affection for each person.

The theology here is that by offering the sacrifice of Christ, God reciprocates with an abundance of spiritual gifts aimed at the salvation, sanctification, and ultimate joy of the believer. This exchange is not transactional but relational, emphasizing the covenant between God and humanity through Christ. Remember, these interpretations can vary slightly among different Christian denominations, but the core idea of receiving grace in return for an offering is broadly recognized.
